The Challenges

The Badwater Ultramarathon is a contender for “The world’s toughest footrace.” Starting at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level, the 135 mile (217 km) run goes through the Badwater Basin of Death Valley, California and finishes at the Whitney Portal, a trailhead to Mount Whitney situated at 8,360 feet (2,548 m). The annual race takes place each July, when the weather conditions are harshest. For example, a temperature of 49º C (120º F) isn’t uncommon. In the shade.
